amberley long. is a sculptural stone carver living and working between the rolling hills and sea of west Dorset.

Long’s curiosity with architecture contrasted with the natural environment has her creating work with stone, wood and clay. Keeping in tone of the natural world, the colours of amberleys sculptures portray a pallette of brown, grey, pastel, taupe and creams. colours in which enters the soul when walking, thinking, breathing. the shapes and natural curves of her sculptures is purely a conversation with the stone, following the grain, listening to the way the material talks back at you when carving. creating purposeful sculptures where us humans can make use of them in some way. underlining the importance of ‘want and need’.
amberley began sculptuing during her time at university studying Fine art at falmouth in cornwall. She explored the tactility and the incident of gravity with plaster and cement in 2019. long began to practice in stone carving in 2019, first using granite; since then this use of material is what amberley uses most.

in 2023 amberley worked in italy with an artist just south of florence in tuscany. she had the opportunity to carve the local stone, granite from elba island and also marble from carrara, which happened to be the same type of marble that michelangelo used to carve the statue of david.

amberley also practices in painting and drawing, as well as film photography. her work mirrors her thoughts, the journey within her everyday and her mind. with an extensive collection of rocks, stones and pebbles through the interest of geology, these objects have been replicated into an abstract two-dimensional painting on canvas or an ink drawing on paper.

her work has been in many exhibitions around the south west of england. amberley is also a co-founder of a collective based in mabe, cornwall known as quarry house collective. the four women artists renovated, reloved and rehomed a hub for the arts on a working granite quarry.

amberley is very open to collaborating and connecting with others. so please, browse her website, follow her on instagram or send her an email to say hello.
